Description
Streptomyces scabiei is a soil-borne phytopathogenic bacterium belonging to the order Actinomycetales. It is a gram-positive, filamentous bacterium that typically exists as a saprophyte in organic-rich soils. However, in the presence of susceptible host plants, it switches to a parasitic life cycle, causing the economically significant disease known as common scab.
This pathogen primarily infects potato tubers, as well as beets, carrots, radishes, and parsnips. The infection leads to the development of necrotic lesions, corky scabs, and irregular pitting on the skin of the tubers. While the internal flesh of the potato usually remains edible, the physical damage significantly reduces marketability and storage quality.
The disease cycle begins when the bacterium invades the developing tubers through lenticels or mechanical wounds. The virulence of S. scabiei is primarily mediated by the production of thaxtomin phytotoxins, which disrupt plant cell wall integrity and allow the bacteria to colonize the periderm tissue. The pathogen can survive in soil for many years, even in the absence of a host crop.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the infection. The pathogen thrives in neutral to alkaline soil conditions (pH 6.0–8.0) and prefers dry, warm soil environments during the stage of tuber initiation. High soil moisture can actually suppress the disease, which is why irrigation management is a key tool in agricultural practices.
Management strategies for controlling common scab are multifaceted and focus on environmental manipulation and genetic resistance. Key practices include:
- planting resistant cultivars;
- maintaining soil pH below 5.5 to create an environment hostile to the pathogen;
- proper crop rotation;
- ensuring adequate irrigation during the sensitive tuberization period.
