Description

Subanguina radicicola is an obligate plant parasitic nematode belonging to the kingdom Animalia, phylum Nematoda, and family Anguinidae. This pathogen is known for inducing the formation of characteristic galls on the roots of host plants, which disrupt the plant's ability to uptake water and essential mineral nutrients.

The primary host range includes various cereal crops, such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats, as well as several wild grass species. Symptoms of infection are most visible on the root system, where small, rounded or irregular galls develop. Above-ground symptoms often include stunted growth, chlorosis, and reduced vigor, eventually leading to lower grain yields.

The biological cycle of this nematode is complex and strictly dependent on its host. Second-stage larvae invade the root tips, stimulating the plant to develop specialized feeding cells (galls). Inside these galls, the nematodes feed and progress through their life stages, eventually producing eggs. Once the galls mature and decay, the offspring are released into the soil environment.

Environmental factors play a crucial role in the dissemination and success of Subanguina radicicola. It thrives in moist soil conditions, particularly in lighter, sandy loam textures. Due to the formation of hardy survival stages, the nematode can persist in soil for several years, making it a challenging pest to manage once a field has become heavily infested.

Management and control of the cereal root gall nematode require an integrated approach to minimize economic losses. Key strategies include:

  • Implementation of long-term crop rotation cycles.
  • Control of graminaceous weeds that serve as alternative hosts.
  • Ensuring the use of certified, clean seed to prevent introduction.
  • Deep tillage practices to bury crop residues and reduce nematode population density in the topsoil.
