Description
Taxonomic position: Tylenchorhynchus brassicae belongs to the kingdom Animalia, phylum Nematoda, and family Dolichodoridae. It is a microscopic ectoparasitic nematode that lives in the soil, inhabiting the rhizosphere and feeding on the outer cells of plant roots without entering the root tissue entirely.
Diseases and host crops: This nematode is a specialist pathogen affecting mainly Brassicaceae family members, including various cabbage varieties, radishes, and turnips. It causes stunted growth, yellowing of the foliage, and significant root system degradation, often leading to reduced vigor and poor crop yields.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of an egg stage followed by four larval stages and the adult stage. The nematode completes its entire life cycle in the soil. It spreads primarily through contaminated soil, agricultural tools, and infected seedlings. It is highly active in the presence of root exudates, which attract the nematodes to the root zone.
Economic impact: Infestation by Tylenchorhynchus brassicae leads to diminished nutrient and water uptake by the host plant.
