Description
The Stunt nematode (Tylenchorhynchus dubius) is a prominent member of the Tylenchida order. This plant-parasitic nematode functions as an ectoparasite, feeding externally on the root systems of various crops. Its presence often leads to significant agricultural losses, as it disrupts the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients effectively.
This pathogen targets a broad host range, including cereals, grasses, potatoes, and various horticultural crops. Feeding by Tylenchorhynchus dubius causes stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and root system proliferation issues. Infected crops often appear patchy in the field, showing signs of severe nutrient deficiency despite adequate fertilization.
The life cycle of this nematode is completed within the soil environment. It progresses through four larval stages before reaching adulthood. Both juveniles and adults act as parasites. During adverse environmental conditions, the nematode can survive in the soil, making it a persistent and difficult pest to eradicate once established in a field.
The development of Tylenchorhynchus dubius is highly correlated with soil texture and moisture levels. It thrives in sandy and sandy-loam soils which provide sufficient pore space for movement.
