Description

Systematic position and pathogen type: Tylenchorhynchus nudus belongs to the kingdom Animalia, phylum Nematoda, and family Dolichodoridae. It is recognized as a plant-parasitic nematode that acts as an ectoparasite. These microscopic organisms feed on the external cells of roots using a needle-like structure called a stylet, damaging the root tissues without entering the root interior completely.

Host crops and diseases: This nematode species is a polyphage, meaning it affects a wide range of agricultural and horticultural plants. Common hosts include cereals, forage grasses, vegetables, and potatoes. Feeding by these nematodes causes stunted growth, root damage, and significant reduction in nutrient uptake, often leading to patchy fields and decreased crop quality.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Tylenchorhynchus nudus consists of an egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult stage. The nematodes thrive in the rhizosphere of plants. Reproduction is continuous during the growing season as long as moisture and food sources are available. They overwinter in the soil as eggs or juveniles, awaiting favorable conditions to resume activity.

Conditions for development and impact: These nematodes prefer well-aerated, moist soil conditions with temperatures ranging between 20°C and 25°C. Their impact is primarily associated with the reduction of root surface area. Heavy infestations weaken the root system, making the plants more susceptible to drought, nutritional deficiencies, and secondary infections by soil-borne fungi and bacteria.

Protection and control measures: Management requires a strategic approach to maintain healthy soil and reduce nematode populations:

  • Implementing crop rotation with non-host or antagonistic crops.
  • Using green manure crops to suppress nematode activity.
  • Strict hygiene of machinery to prevent movement of contaminated soil between fields.
  • Application of specialized nematicides when infestation levels exceed economic thresholds.
  • Enhancing soil organic matter to promote natural biological control agents.
