The citrus nematode (Tylenchulus semipenetrans) is a significant soil-borne obligate plant parasite belonging to the phylum Nematoda. It is globally recognized as a primary threat to citrus production, affecting nearly all commercial citrus-growing regions across the world.

This pathogen specifically targets the roots of plants in the Rutaceae family, particularly citrus trees. By feeding on the cortical cells of the root, the nematode impairs the tree's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients, which leads to a condition commonly referred to as "slow decline," characterized by stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and reduced fruit size.

The life cycle of Tylenchulus semipenetrans involves complex morphological changes. Juvenile stages remain mobile in the soil, seeking out healthy root tips. Upon finding a suitable host, the sedentary female partially embeds its body into the root cortex, while the posterior end remains exposed to the soil, where it deposits egg masses protected by a gelatinous matrix.

Environmental conditions such as warm temperatures and well-aerated sandy soils are ideal for the proliferation and survival of this parasite. Movement is facilitated through root-to-root contact, contaminated irrigation water, and the transfer of infested soil via machinery, footwear, or the movement of infected nursery stock.

Management of the citrus nematode requires an integrated approach to maintain orchard productivity. Key strategies include:

  • Utilizing nematode-free certified rootstocks.
  • Planting resistant cultivars which limit nematode reproduction.
  • Implementing soil solarization in young plantations to reduce initial inoculum.
  • Applying chemical or biological nematicides targeting soil populations.
  • Maintaining high levels of tree vigor through optimal irrigation and balanced fertilization.
