Xanthomonas albilineans is a Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium within the genus Xanthomonas. It is recognized globally as the primary causal agent of leaf scald, a systemic vascular disease affecting sugarcane. This pathogen is of significant economic concern, particularly in tropical sugar-producing regions where it can cause substantial yield losses and lead to the degradation of entire sugarcane fields.

The host range of this bacterium is primarily focused on Saccharum officinarum (sugarcane) and several related grass species. The disease manifests in two distinct stages: a chronic stage, where typical narrow white or chlorotic streaks appear on the leaves, and an acute stage, which causes sudden wilting, death of the growing point, and subsequent necrosis of the entire stalk due to vascular occlusion.

The biology of Xanthomonas albilineans is driven by the production of a potent toxin known as albicidin. This phytotoxin inhibits chloroplast development and bacterial DNA replication. By colonizing the xylem vessels, the bacteria disrupt the plant's hydraulic conductivity. The pathogen is highly adapted to move systemically within the plant, colonizing the stems and potentially the root system, which explains the severe nature of the infection.

Transmission occurs through several pathways, most notably via the use of infected vegetative cuttings (setts). Mechanical transmission via contaminated harvesting tools and farm equipment is also a major driver of spread within plantations. Wind-blown rain and irrigation water can facilitate the movement of bacteria from infected to healthy tissues. The survival of the bacterium in soil and crop debris is limited, but it persists effectively in dormant or latent infected planting materials.

Effective management requires a combination of strict quarantine measures and good agricultural practices. The primary strategy involves the use of certified pathogen-free planting stock and the cultivation of resistant or tolerant cultivars. Sanitation is paramount; this includes disinfecting tools with chemical agents like ethanol or sodium hypochlorite between plants. Ongoing monitoring and rapid rogueing of diseased plants remain the most effective methods to contain the spread of the disease.
