Leaf scald is a significant fungal disease affecting rice and occasionally sugar cane, caused by the pathogen Microdochium albescens. The disease predominantly impacts the foliage of the plants, leading to severe chlorosis and necrosis. It is a widespread issue in many rice-growing regions where high humidity levels are maintained throughout the season.

The pathogen is a fungus that survives primarily on infected crop debris and contaminated seeds. Its spores, known as conidia, are dispersed via water splashes from rainfall or irrigation, and are occasionally spread by wind. The disease flourishes in high-humidity conditions (typically above 85% relative humidity) and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C, which favor active fungal growth.

The characteristic symptoms begin as small, water-soaked, light-gray or brown lesions on the leaf tips or margins. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand, turning straw-colored with dark, wavy margins, eventually causing the leaves to dry out and resemble a burn. In severe cases, the fungus may infect the panicles, reducing grain fill.

The economic impact of leaf scald is primarily linked to yield reduction caused by the loss of photosynthetic area. Severely infected plants show stunted growth, reduced tillering, and lower grain quality. When environmental conditions remain favorable for the pathogen, crop losses can become substantial, affecting the profitability of the entire harvest.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Farmers should prioritize the use of resistant rice cultivars and ensure the use of certified pathogen-free seeds. Proper water management and field sanitation, including the destruction of crop residue after harvest, are essential to break the infection cycle. If necessary, targeted fungicide applications during the early stages of disease development can significantly mitigate damage.
