Xanthomonas campestris is a Gram-negative bacterium belonging to the genus Xanthomonas. It is a highly specialized plant pathogen known to cause severe diseases in a wide range of crops, particularly those in the Brassicaceae family, such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and oilseed rape. Its impact on agriculture is significant due to its ability to cause widespread crop failure under favorable conditions.

The most devastating disease caused by this pathogen is black rot. The typical symptoms include V-shaped chlorotic lesions appearing at the margins of the leaves, which eventually turn necrotic and brown. As the infection progresses, the blackening of the vascular tissue becomes visible in the petioles and stems, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and often the premature death of the entire plant.

The biology of Xanthomonas campestris is centered on systemic colonization of the host plant. The pathogen enters the plant through hydathodes or wounds, subsequently moving into the xylem vessels. Inside the vascular system, the bacteria multiply rapidly and produce extracellular enzymes that degrade plant cell walls. The pathogen survives in infested crop debris, contaminated seeds, and weed hosts throughout the off-season.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of this disease. Optimal temperatures for bacterial growth range from 25°C to 30°C, combined with high humidity or frequent rainfall. Splashing water, wind-driven rain, and contaminated agricultural equipment act as primary vectors for spreading the bacteria across the field during the growing season.

Management of Xanthomonas campestris requires an integrated approach to minimize economic losses. Effective control measures include:

  • Using certified disease-free seeds and performing seed treatments.
  • Planting resistant or tolerant cultivars when available.
  • Implementing strict crop rotation (at least 3 years) and managing volunteer cruciferous weeds.
  • Applying copper-based bactericides preventively in high-risk conditions.
