Description
Bacterial leaf streak is a serious plant disease caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas vasicola. This pathogen belongs to the vascular bacteriosis group and primarily affects cereal crops, including maize (corn), sorghum, rice, and wild rice (Zizania). The disease has become a significant concern for growers, as it can cause widespread foliar damage under favorable climatic conditions.
The characteristic symptoms appear as narrow, translucent, linear lesions between the leaf veins. These streaks can be yellow, tan, or dark brown and may expand as the disease progresses. In humid, warm conditions, a yellowish bacterial ooze may be visible on the surface of the lesions, which later dries into a thin, flaky or crusty film, serving as a reservoir for further spread during rainfall.
The development of the disease is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and temperatures between +25°C and +30°C. Heavy rainfall and wind-driven rain are the primary drivers of pathogen dispersal within a field. The bacterium can overwinter in crop residues, on the surface of seeds, and in alternative host grasses, allowing it to survive between growing seasons.
The economic damage caused by bacterial leaf streak is significant due to the reduction of photosynthetic leaf area. Premature necrosis of leaves leads to reduced grain fill, lower test weights, and decreased overall yields. In severe cases or during favorable environmental conditions for the pathogen, crop losses can become substantial, affecting both the quantity and quality of the harvested produce.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management approach focused on reducing initial inoculum levels. Key strategies include:
- Choosing resistant or tolerant crop hybrids.
- Practicing crop rotation to break the disease cycle.
- Implementing deep tillage to bury infected residues and accelerate their decomposition.
- Managing weeds that may serve as secondary hosts.
- Avoiding field activities when foliage is wet to minimize the mechanical spread of bacteria.
