Xanthomonas fragariae

Xanthomonas fragariae is a Gram-negative bacterium belonging to the family Xanthomonadaceae. It is a highly host-specific phytopathogen that exclusively infects members of the genus Fragaria. As the causative agent of bacterial angular leaf spot, it represents a significant economic threat to strawberry production globally, particularly in nurseries where plant vigor is essential.

The disease is characterized by water-soaked, angular lesions that are restricted by leaf veins. When humidity is high, these spots may exude bacterial ooze on the underside of the leaves, which dries into a translucent, shiny film. Severe infections can cause systemic spread, leading to the necrosis of calyxes and systemic wilting, which reduces both yield and fruit quality significantly.

The lifecycle of the pathogen is driven by moisture. The bacteria survive between seasons in infected plant debris and soil, or within the vascular tissues of dormant plants. During the growing season, bacteria are disseminated by splash dispersal from rain or irrigation water. They enter the host plants through natural openings, such as stomata, or through minor wounds caused by handling or wind abrasion.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease epidemiology. The pathogen thrives under moderate temperatures (15–25°C) combined with high relative humidity and surface wetness. Frost events are particularly dangerous, as they create microscopic cracks in the plant tissue, providing easy entry points for the bacteria. Once established, the disease can spread rapidly within a crop canopy.

Effective management strategy relies primarily on exclusion and prevention. Since there are no fully curative chemical controls, the use of certified pathogen-free propagation material is the single most important practice. Cultural controls such as improving air circulation, avoiding overhead irrigation, and meticulous sanitation of equipment are essential to minimizing the impact of the disease in commercial strawberry fields.
