Angular leaf spot

Pseudomonas syringae

Description

Angular leaf spot is a destructive bacterial disease caused by the pathogen Pseudomonas syringae. This type of bacterial infection targets plant tissues, primarily leaves and fruits, causing necrosis and significantly impeding the physiological processes essential for the plant's growth and development.

The pathogen hosts a wide range of plants, including common beans, watermelons, cultivated grapes, strawberries, papaya, and tobacco. Because the bacteria can survive in soil, crop debris, and contaminated seeds, the disease poses a constant risk to field and greenhouse agricultural systems globally.

The primary symptom is the development of water-soaked, angular-shaped spots on leaves, which are typically restricted by leaf veins. As the disease progresses, these lesions turn brown or necrotic, and the dry, dead tissue often detaches, resulting in a characteristic "shot-hole" appearance across the foliage.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of the infection. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and mild temperatures (20–25°C) create an ideal microclimate for bacterial multiplication. The pathogen enters the host through natural openings, such as stomata, or through wounds caused by insects, hail, or agricultural machinery.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it leads to reduced photosynthesis, defoliation, and direct damage to produce quality. On fruits, the bacteria cause sunken, dark-colored lesions, rendering the harvest unmarketable and susceptible to subsequent opportunistic decay organisms.

Effective management requires an integrated strategy, including the use of certified pathogen-free seeds and the implementation of resistant cultivars. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, removing infected plant residues, and controlling irrigation levels help reduce pressure. Copper-based bactericides are commonly used as a preventative or curative measure in commercial agriculture.
