Xanthomonas fuscans is a Gram-negative bacterial species belonging to the genus Xanthomonas, known for its status as a significant plant pathogen. Initially identified as a subspecies of Xanthomonas campestris, it is now recognized as a distinct species that specializes in infecting specific agricultural crops, primarily members of the Fabaceae family, such as common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris).

This bacterium is the causal agent of common bacterial blight in beans. The disease manifests as small, water-soaked spots on leaves that eventually enlarge and turn brown, often surrounded by a characteristic yellow halo. When the infection becomes systemic, it can cause wilting, stunted growth, and the development of necrotic lesions on stems and pods, significantly affecting the quality and quantity of the harvest.

The biology of Xanthomonas fuscans centers on its ability to overwinter in infested seeds and crop residues. Transmission is highly dependent on environmental moisture; bacteria enter host tissues through natural openings like stomata or through wounds caused by weather events or pest feeding. Once inside, the bacteria multiply rapidly within the apoplast, moving through the xylem vessels to spread systemically throughout the plant.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the epidemiology of this pathogen. Xanthomonas fuscans thrives in warm and humid conditions, with optimal temperatures for infection ranging from +25 °C to +30 °C. Frequent rainfall, high humidity, and overhead irrigation are the primary drivers of pathogen dispersal within a field, as splashing water droplets effectively move the bacteria from infected plant tissues to healthy leaves and pods.

Effective management and control of Xanthomonas fuscans require an integrated approach. Because the pathogen is seed-borne, the use of certified, disease-free seed is the most vital preventive measure. Additional strategies include implementing a minimum 3-year crop rotation, managing weeds that may serve as alternative hosts, and utilizing copper-based bactericides during periods of high humidity to suppress bacterial populations on the plant surface.
