Fuscous blight

Fuscous blight is a significant bacterial disease caused by the pathogen Xanthomonas fuscans. This disease is known to be highly destructive, affecting the overall physiological processes of susceptible host plants and leading to substantial yield losses in agricultural production.

The primary host for this pathogen is the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). The bacteria can colonize all aerial parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, petioles, pods, and seeds. The pathogen primarily enters the host tissue through stomata or wounds caused by hail, wind, or insect feeding.

Symptoms typically begin as small, water-soaked spots on leaves that eventually enlarge and turn brown, often surrounded by a characteristic yellow halo. When the infection spreads to the pods, it manifests as water-soaked lesions that later develop into irregular, brown, sunken spots. In cases of severe infection, the bacterial exudate may appear on the surface of the lesions.

The development of Xanthomonas fuscans is strongly influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures. The pathogen is seed-borne, meaning that infected seeds are a major source of inoculum for new infections. Once in the field, the bacteria are disseminated by splashing water, rain, wind, and even farm equipment.

Effective management requires an integrated strategy to minimize disease pressure. Key practices include:

• Utilizing high-quality, certified, disease-free seed lots.
• Implementing a crop rotation cycle of at least 3-4 years to reduce soil inoculum.
• Destroying crop residues immediately after harvest to prevent survival of the bacteria.
• Applying copper-based bactericides at the early onset of symptoms to reduce the spread.
