Systematic position and pathogen type. Xiphinema chambersi belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Enoplea, and the family Longidoridae. It is classified as an ectoparasitic nematode. These microscopic soil-dwelling organisms are specialized pathogens equipped with a long, needle-like feeding organ called an odontostyle, which they use to penetrate the root tissue of their host plants to extract nutrients.
Diseases and host crops. This nematode species parasitizes a diverse range of agricultural and horticultural crops, affecting primarily the root systems. Feeding causes stunted growth, root tip necrosis, and weakened plant vigor. By wounding the roots, Xiphinema chambersi predisposes plants to secondary infections by soil-borne fungi and bacteria, which can lead to significant plant decline.
