Description
Systematic position and pathogen type. Xiphinema rivesi is a species of soil-dwelling plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Longidoridae, order Dorylaimida. As an ectoparasite, it feeds on the roots of various host plants and serves as a significant biological vector for several destructive nepoviruses.
Diseases and host range. This nematode is primarily known as the vector for the Tomato Ringspot Virus (ToRSV) and Tobacco Ringspot Virus (TRSV). Its host range is broad, encompassing economically important crops such as grapevines, apple trees, peaches, cherries, and various berry crops, leading to significant yield losses due to stunted growth and vine decline.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Xiphinema rivesi includes eggs and four juvenile stages, all of which undergo molting. The nematode utilizes a long, needle-like stylet to penetrate the root tissue and feed on cells. Reproduction is amphimictic, and the lifespan of individuals is relatively long, allowing them to persist in the soil for several years.
Environmental conditions and impact. The distribution of this species is influenced by soil moisture, temperature, and soil structure, preferring well-aerated environments. While root damage from feeding is visible, the primary damage is the injection of viruses during feeding. Infected plants show symptoms of chlorosis, necrosis, and reduced vigor, eventually leading to economic failure of the entire plantation.
Protection and control measures. Management is challenging due to the nematode's survival depth in the soil and its ability to harbor viruses. Recommended practices include:
- Soil testing for nematode populations before establishing new plantations.
- Fumigation of soil to reduce population density below the damage threshold.
- Control of weeds that serve as alternative reservoirs for both the nematode and the virus.
- Implementation of strict quarantine measures and use of certified, nematode-free nursery stock.
