Cotton blister mite

Acalitus gossypii

Description

Systematic position: The cotton blister mite (Acalitus gossypii) is classified within the class Arachnida, order Acariformes, and family Eriophyidae. These microscopic mites are characterized by having only two pairs of legs, a worm-like body, and a highly specialized feeding habit that leads to the formation of galls on host plants.

Host plants: The primary and almost exclusive host plant for Acalitus gossypii is cotton (Gossypium spp.). The mites inhabit the aerial parts of the plant, specifically targeting the young, developing tissues of leaves, petioles, and terminal buds where the metabolic activity is highest.

Biology and life cycle: The mite undergoes a complex life cycle entirely on the host plant. Overwintering occurs as fertilized females in protected niches such as bark crevices or dormant buds. With the onset of favorable spring temperatures, they emerge to infest new shoots. Several overlapping generations can occur throughout the growing season, allowing the population to build up rapidly under warm and humid conditions.

Damage and economic importance: As the mites feed, they inject salivary enzymes into the plant tissue, causing the development of characteristic blister-like galls. These structures provide protection for the mites but also severely disrupt the plant's physiological processes. Heavy infestations lead to stunted growth, leaf deformation, reduced fiber quality, and significant yield losses in commercial cotton production.

Protection measures: Controlling Acalitus gossypii is challenging because the galls protect the mites from contact insecticides. Integrated management includes:

  • Strict field sanitation, including the destruction of infested cotton stalks and debris after harvest.
  • Crop rotation and spatial separation between cotton fields to prevent mite migration.
  • Early season application of systemic acaricides before the galls become fully closed and hardened.
  • Promotion of natural predators such as predatory phytoseiid mites within the cotton ecosystem.
