Acalitus
Acalitus
Description
Acalitus (lat. Acalitus) is a genus of microscopic four-legged mites belonging to the family Eriophyidae. These pests are extremely small, often invisible to the naked eye, which makes their identification difficult until significant damage to the host plant's tissues becomes apparent in the form of deformities or discoloration.
The genus includes various species, each often host-specific. One of the most economically significant species is Acalitus essigi, known as the redberry mite, which infests blackberries. Other species focus on trees like birch. These mites are classified as obligate parasites, meaning they depend entirely on the host plant for food and shelter throughout their entire life cycle.
The biology of the Acalitus mite is characterized by a rapid development cycle. Females typically overwinter in protected areas of the plant, such as leaf buds or bark crevices. In spring, when temperatures rise, they emerge and start laying eggs on developing tissues. Throughout the season, several overlapping generations are produced, leading to a exponential increase in the pest population if environmental conditions are favorable.
The damage is caused by the mite’s feeding, which involves injecting salivary enzymes into the plant. This triggers abnormal cell growth, resulting in the formation of galls, leaf curling, shoot distortion, and in the case of fruit crops, failure of fruits to ripen properly. High populations can cause severe stunted growth, significantly reducing harvest quality and weakening the plant's overall health and vigor.
Effective management strategies against Acalitus include the following:
- Strict sanitation by pruning and destroying infested branches or buds.
- Early season application of sulfur-based products to limit mite population growth.
- Application of specialized acaricides when the mite population crosses the economic threshold.
- Promoting strong plant growth through balanced fertilization and correct watering practices.
- Regular monitoring of gardens for early signs of leaf deformation or gall formation.
