Acalolepta

Systematic position
The genus Acalolepta belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles or long-horned wood-boring beetles. These insects are significant pests that cause considerable economic damage to forests and fruit-bearing orchards by boring into the woody tissues of their hosts.

Host plants
Acalolepta species are primarily polyphagous and target a wide variety of broad-leaved trees. Important agricultural hosts include citrus trees, apples, and pears, as well as several ornamental and forest species such as willows, poplars, and elms. Their ability to infest healthy, vigorous trees makes them a serious threat to managed agricultural environments.

Biology and life cycle
The life cycle of these beetles is deeply integrated into the internal structure of the tree. Adult beetles emerge during the summer to mate and lay eggs within bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the inner bark and sapwood. The larvae spend most of their development tunneling through the wood, which makes chemical control difficult once the infestation is established.

Damage and severity
The primary damage is caused by larval boring, which creates galleries that disrupt the vascular tissues of the tree. This interference with water and nutrient transport leads to branch dieback, general canopy thinning, and often the death of the entire tree. Infestation sites are usually identifiable by piles of frass, known as "sawdust," accumulating at the base of the tree or in branch crotches.

Control measures
Effective management of Acalolepta requires a preventive approach combining cultural and chemical strategies:

• Regular field scouting to identify early signs of infestation and entry holes.
• Sanitary pruning and immediate destruction (burning) of infested limbs or entire trees.
• Application of systemic insecticides or contact sprays timed with the adult emergence period.
• Maintaining optimal tree health and vigor through balanced fertilization and irrigation to reduce susceptibility.
