Taxonomic classification. Acalolepta rusticator belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. This insect is a significant wood-boring pest that poses a threat to the health and structural integrity of various deciduous tree species in both natural forests and cultivated orchards.

Host plants. The species exhibits a broad host range, feeding on a wide variety of hardwoods. It is known to target several economically important trees, including fruit-bearing species and various ornamental trees. The pest is particularly attracted to trees that are already stressed by environmental factors or disease.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves egg deposition on the surface of the bark, followed by larval development inside the tree. As larvae hatch, they immediately bore into the phloem and subsequently the xylem. They remain within the wood for an extended period, creating extensive gallery systems that facilitate their feeding and eventual pupation.

Damage and economic impact. The primary damage is caused by the larval tunneling, which disrupts the transport of nutrients and water throughout the plant. Over time, this leads to branch dieback, thinning of the canopy, and potential death of the entire tree. Infested trees lose their aesthetic value and, in severe cases, become prone to windthrow due to structural weakness.

Control measures. Management of this pest relies on a combination of cultural and chemical interventions:

• Implement strict sanitary measures by removing and destroying heavily infested trees to prevent the spread of larvae.
• Monitor the emergence of adults using pheromone or light traps to determine the best timing for insecticide applications.
• Maintain tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization, as healthy trees are better able to resist larval colonization.
• Apply systemic or contact insecticides to the bark during the peak adult flight period.
