Two-striped cucumber beetle

Acalymma bivittulum is a beetle species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is widely recognized as a serious pest of cucurbitaceous crops. These beetles are easily identified by the distinct striped pattern on their elytra, which makes them a significant concern for commercial cucurbit producers.

The primary hosts of this pest include various cucurbits, such as cucumbers, squash, melons, and pumpkins. Adults feed on foliage, stems, and blossoms, causing substantial aesthetic and structural damage to the plants. Larvae, residing in the soil, feed on the roots, which significantly impairs nutrient and water uptake, often leading to plant stunting.

The biology of this species involves complete metamorphosis. Overwintering adults emerge in the spring, coinciding with the germination of host plants. The eggs are deposited near the base of the plant. After hatching, the larvae move into the soil to feed on root hairs and primary roots, eventually pupating underground before emerging as the next generation of adults.

Damage caused by this beetle is two-fold. Direct damage involves tissue destruction, which decreases photosynthetic capacity and plant vigor. Indirectly, these insects serve as vectors for several plant diseases, particularly bacterial wilt. Once an infection is introduced through feeding wounds, the plant often wilts and dies rapidly, leading to total crop failure.

Effective management strategies include:

• Implementation of row covers during the seedling stage to physically exclude beetles.
• Crop rotation to break the pest's reproductive cycle in the soil.
• Removal of plant debris and weeds that may harbor overwintering populations.
• Application of systemic insecticides at planting or foliar sprays when thresholds are reached.
• Using sticky yellow traps to monitor the timing of beetle arrival in fields.
