Acanalonia

Acanalonia is a genus of insects belonging to the family Acanaloniidae within the order Hemiptera. These insects are closely related to planthoppers and are specialized to feed on plant sap, making them significant pests in both ornamental landscaping and commercial agricultural sectors.

This pest is characterized by its wide polyphagy. Its host range includes a diverse variety of plants, such as grapevines, citrus trees, fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, vegetable crops, and various herbaceous perennials. Their high degree of adaptability allows them to quickly colonize new areas, posing a consistent threat to productivity in home gardens and commercial farms.

The life cycle of Acanalonia consists of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Females lay their eggs into plant tissues or under the bark, where they overwinter. In the spring, nymphs emerge, resembling wingless adults. They undergo several molts, gradually developing wings, and reach sexual maturity by mid-summer, at which point the cycle repeats itself.

The primary damage is caused by the depletion of the plant due to sap-feeding. Piercing-sucking mouthparts lead to leaf chlorosis, stunted shoot growth, curling of leaf blades, and the premature dropping of buds or fruit. Furthermore, Acanalonia excretes honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold. This mold covers the leaf surface in a black layer, disrupting photosynthesis and severely reducing the overall quality of the harvest.

Control measures require an integrated approach, combining cultural and chemical techniques. It is essential to conduct regular monitoring of plants, remove infested branches, and clear weeds that may harbor nymphs. In cases of severe infestations, systemic insecticides are applied. Additionally, the use of yellow sticky traps is effective for monitoring the population of adult insects and detecting the early stages of infestation.
