Acanalonia conica

Acanalonia conica, commonly known as a type of green cone-headed planthopper, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Acanaloniidae. This insect is easily recognized by its triangular, wedge-shaped silhouette and its pale green color, which mimics the texture and shade of foliage. As a planthopper, it is known for its jumping ability and tendency to hide on the undersides of leaves.

This pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast range of host plants. Major hosts include grapevines (Vitis vinifera), various fruit trees such as apple and pear, ornamental shrubs, and numerous herbaceous weeds. Because it can thrive on diverse vegetation, it can easily migrate from wild hosts into cultivated crops, posing a risk to diverse agricultural environments.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The insect typically overwinters as eggs inserted into the bark or plant stems. In the spring, the nymphs emerge and begin feeding immediately. They progress through several molts before reaching the adult stage, usually by mid-to-late summer, when they become highly mobile and visible on the stems and leaves.

The damage caused by Acanalonia conica is primarily due to the extraction of plant sap. This feeding causes chlorosis, leaf curling, and overall stunted growth in the infested parts of the plant. Additionally, the insects excrete honeydew, a sticky substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungus blocks sunlight and inhibits photosynthesis, further weakening the plant and reducing crop quality.

Management strategies focus on cultural and chemical control. Key practices include:

• Maintaining sanitation by removing weeds that serve as alternative hosts.
• Pruning infested shoots during the early stages of an outbreak.
• Monitoring plant health to detect nymphs before they reach the adult stage.
• Applying insecticides only when thresholds are exceeded and using products labeled for specific crops.
