Description

The fringe-toed lizard (genus Acanthodactylus) belongs to the Lacertidae family, order Squamata. While primarily insectivorous, these reptiles are often encountered in agricultural settings in arid regions, where their burrowing and feeding habits can occasionally interfere with the establishment of young horticultural crops.

These lizards primarily damage vegetable crops, melons, and newly sown field rows. The damage occurs predominantly during the germination phase, as the lizards can disturb the soil while hunting for insects, subsequently causing mechanical injury to emerging seedlings or eating the succulent parts of young stems.

The biological cycle is strictly regulated by environmental temperature. Breeding occurs in spring, with eggs laid in burrows or loose sandy soil. As the population grows, their activity levels increase, making them more visible in fields. Their ability to survive in harsh conditions allows them to maintain stable populations adjacent to irrigated farmland.

The nature of the damage is often characterized by uprooting of seedlings and bites on leaves. While the individual impact of one lizard is negligible, a high density of the population can result in significant gaps in rows. This poses an economic risk, particularly in high-value vegetable production where uniform plant density is critical.

Control measures focus on habitat modification rather than extermination. Maintaining weed-free field borders is essential to discourage nesting. Shallow tillage and cultivation are effective in disrupting their burrowing sites. Installing fine-mesh physical barriers around small plots can prevent access, ensuring crop protection without the need for harmful chemical pesticides.
