Bean weevil

The bean weevil (Acanthoscelides obtectus) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. It is considered a cosmopolitan species that poses a severe threat to leguminous crops, particularly in agricultural settings and storage facilities where it can rapidly infest entire batches of seeds.

This pest primarily targets common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), but it is also known to infest other pulses such as chickpeas, lentils, and peas. The infestation usually begins in the field when females lay eggs on ripening pods, but the cycle often continues indoors if the harvest is not properly protected, leading to exponential population growth.

The life cycle of the bean weevil consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae penetrate the seed coat and tunnel into the cotyledons. Inside the seed, they consume the nutrient-rich tissues, undergoing several molts before pupating. Under optimal conditions, the entire cycle can be completed in just a few weeks.

Damage caused by this insect is easily identified by the presence of circular exit holes on the surface of the seeds. A single seed can support multiple larvae, often leading to total destruction of the interior. This results in significant loss of seed weight, complete loss of germination potential, and contamination of the product with frass and waste, making it unfit for consumption.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies. Harvesting beans as early as possible prevents field infestation. In storage, maintaining low temperatures (below 10°C) or using controlled atmosphere treatments can effectively stop the reproductive cycle. Regular inspection of stored stocks and using certified, weevil-free seeds are essential components of an integrated pest management program.
