Bean weevil (Acanthoscelides pullus)

Acanthoscelides pullus is a member of the seed beetle family (Bruchidae) within the order Coleoptera. This species is a specialized agricultural pest that targets legumes, particularly beans. Understanding its life cycle and habits is essential for maintaining high-quality harvests in both industrial fields and domestic seed storage facilities.

The host range of this pest primarily includes various species of legumes. It is particularly damaging to stored beans, as it can complete multiple generations in a short time if storage conditions are not controlled. While infestation often begins in the field during the seed maturation phase, it is within storage that the pest causes the most significant population spikes.

The biology of the insect is centered on the seed. Females deposit eggs on the surface of seeds. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the seed coat and consume the endosperm and embryo. This internal feeding protects the larva from environmental conditions and many contact insecticides, making the pest particularly difficult to manage once it has penetrated the seed.

Damage is characterized by distinct circular emergence holes on the surface of the beans and the complete internal consumption of the grain. This feeding process results in a catastrophic reduction in seed germination rates, rendering the stock useless for planting. Furthermore, infested beans lose their nutritional value and are often contaminated with frass, making them unsuitable for processing or human consumption.
