Description

Schrank's seed beetle (Acanthoscelides schrankiae) is a concealed-feeding pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. This small beetle is specialized in attacking the seeds of various leguminous plants, posing a significant threat to agricultural production and the storage of pulses.

The primary hosts for this pest include members of the Fabaceae family, specifically plants within the genus Desmanthus, as well as several other wild and cultivated legumes. The beetle is primarily distributed across the Americas, and its presence necessitates strict phytosanitary control to prevent further spread via international trade.

The biological cycle of this insect is closely linked to the generative phase of its host plants. Females lay eggs directly onto the surface of the pods or developing seeds. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the seeds, where they consume the inner tissue, completing their development within the safety of the seed coat.

The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by the presence of circular exit holes on the seed surface once the adult beetle emerges.
