Description

The Acanthoscelides seminulum species is a beetle belonging to the Bruchidae family within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that primarily targets legume seeds, posing a constant threat to both cultivation sites and post-harvest storage facilities.

This pest mainly infests bean crops (Phaseolus species) and occasionally other legumes. Its ability to thrive in warm conditions allows it to transition easily from field crops to stored seeds, often leading to rapid infestation if the moisture and temperature levels in the storage area are not strictly managed.

The biology of this weevil includes four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female lays eggs on the seed coat. Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the seed, consuming the endosperm and embryo. The development period is highly dependent on environmental temperature and humidity levels.

Damage is characterized by circular exit holes created by emerging adults. These holes significantly reduce the market value of the crop, render seeds unfit for planting due to embryonic destruction, and reduce the nutritional quality of the produce, often contaminating it with waste products.

Control strategies must be integrated, combining physical, chemical, and cultural methods. Prevention is the first line of defense: using high-quality clean seeds, proper sanitation of warehouses, and maintaining low temperatures in storage. Chemical fumigation is frequently necessary for large commercial stockpiles to prevent severe losses.
