Description
The genus Achaearanea belongs to the Theridiidae family, commonly known as cobweb spiders. While these spiders generally function as predators of small insects, their presence in large numbers within greenhouse environments can interfere with agricultural practices, causing them to be viewed as a nuisance for growers and farmers.
The biology of these spiders is adapted to environments with high humidity and stable temperatures. Females produce egg sacs which are typically hidden within the messy, tangled webs they construct. Their life cycle is relatively fast, allowing them to establish stable colonies in protected structures such as commercial greenhouses and indoor orchards.
The primary damage associated with Achaearanea is not direct herbivory, but rather the construction of dense, unsightly webs on plant stems and foliage. These webs interfere with the physiological processes of the plants by trapping dust and creating a substrate that promotes the growth of sooty mold and other fungal diseases.
In terms of economic impact, the presence of these webs significantly reduces the aesthetic value of ornamental plants. Furthermore, the persistent web layers can obstruct light, hinder proper airflow, and make it physically difficult to apply agricultural pesticides to the plant surface, inadvertently protecting other actual plant pests from chemical treatment.
Effective management strategies focus on sanitation and physical exclusion. Regularly cleaning the greenhouse infrastructure to remove web structures and egg sacs is the most effective approach. Maintaining dry conditions and proper ventilation can also discourage spiders from settling. In severe cases, targeted acaricides can be used, though integrated pest management practices are generally preferred.
