Systematic position: Acizzia solanicola belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Psyllidae. It is a sap-sucking insect that has gained prominence as a significant agricultural pest. Due to its specific host preference, it poses a direct threat to the productivity of solanaceous crops in both open fields and protected environments.

Host plants: This pest primarily affects members of the Solanaceae family. Key crops at risk include potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants. The insect can survive on various wild host plants as well, which serves as a reservoir for recurring infestations during the growing season.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through egg, nymph (five instars), and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the leaves and stems of host plants. The nymphs are the primary feeding stage, remaining stationary for long periods to extract plant phloem sap. Development is strongly influenced by local temperatures, with warmer conditions significantly shortening the maturation time.

Nature of damage: Feeding by Acizzia solanicola causes severe leaf curling, stunted plant growth, and chlorosis. The psyllids secrete honeydew, which leads to the growth of sooty mold, blocking light and reducing photosynthesis. Chronic infestations can lead to total crop failure if left unmanaged, particularly in young, susceptible plants.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Practices include crop rotation, the elimination of alternative weed hosts, and the use of yellow sticky traps to monitor population density.
