These pests primarily target woody perennials, including apple, pear, and various ornamental species. They extract plant sap from buds, young leaves, and developing shoots. As they feed, they secrete a sugary substance called honeydew, which attracts ants and provides a substrate for sooty mold growth, further damaging the host plant.

The life cycle of a psyllid typically consists of an egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Many species overwinter as adults in protected areas such as tree bark crevices or under leaf litter. In the spring, they migrate to host plants to lay eggs. Under favorable climatic conditions, multiple generations can occur during a single season.

The damage caused by psyllids goes beyond direct sap removal. Infested plants often show stunted growth, leaf curling, and premature leaf drop. The presence of sooty mold, caused by the colonization of honeydew by fungi, inhibits photosynthesis and reduces the overall vigor of the tree, ultimately leading to significant yield losses in fruit production.

Managing psyllid populations requires an integrated approach. Early season monitoring is crucial for timing chemical interventions. Horticultural oils or systemic insecticides applied at the green tip stage can be very effective. Furthermore, promoting natural predators like lacewings, lady beetles, and parasitic wasps helps maintain biological balance in the orchard.
