While often identified as a bacteriophage, this species is frequently associated with the rhizosphere of various crops, where its presence can negatively impact root health and predispose plants to infection by pathogenic microorganisms.

This pest affects a diverse range of crops, including cereals, potatoes, and various horticultural plants. The infestation is particularly severe in environments with high moisture levels and a surplus of organic matter, which promotes the growth of bacteria that serve as the primary food source for the nematodes, leading to population explosions.

The biology of this nematode is characterized by a rapid reproductive rate that is strictly dependent on soil temperature and moisture conditions. They possess a high degree of plasticity and can enter an anhydrobiotic state to survive extreme environmental stress, making them persistent residents of agricultural soils that are difficult to eradicate once established.

The damage caused by Acrobeloides thornei is primarily indirect, as they graze on root tissues already weakened by primary pathogens, further compromising plant structural integrity.
