Cephalobus striatus is a species of soil nematode belonging to the order Rhabditida and the family Cephalobidae. While often characterized as a bacteriophage, this nematode is frequently associated with damaged plant tissues, where it acts as a secondary parasite, exploiting weakened root systems and accelerating plant decline.

This pest affects a wide range of agricultural crops, including cereals and horticultural vegetables. Young plants are particularly vulnerable, as the colonization of the rhizosphere disrupts the uptake of essential nutrients, leading to stunted development, poor foliage color, and increased susceptibility to environmental stress.

The biology of Cephalobus striatus is heavily dependent on soil moisture and organic matter content. The lifecycle consists of eggs, four larval stages, and adults, with the entire cycle occurring within the soil matrix. Under optimal conditions, the population density can rise rapidly, making it a persistent challenge in humid climates.

Damage caused by this nematode involves the degradation of root cortex cells. As the nematodes feed and migrate through the root tissues, they create lesions that serve as entry points for phytopathogenic fungi and bacteria. This complex interaction often leads to the development of root rots, significantly impacting total yield.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management practices. Key techniques include crop rotation with non-host plants, proper field drainage to reduce excess moisture, and the incorporation of organic amendments that suppress nematode activity. Chemical control, involving soil fumigation or the application of nematicides, may be necessary in extreme cases.
