Tortoise beetle
Acrocassis
Description
The genus Acrocassis belongs to the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) within the order Coleoptera. These insects are commonly known as tortoise beetles due to their distinctive flattened, shield-like body shape. The edges of the elytra are expanded to cover the head and legs, providing an evolutionary advantage by protecting the beetle from predators and environmental stress.
These beetles are specialized herbivores that primarily feed on plants within the Convolvulaceae family. They are frequently associated with bindweed species, but they can significantly impact cultivated crops like sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) when grown in proximity to weed hosts. Their host range is often limited to specific taxa, making the management of weeds a critical aspect of their control.
The life cycle of Acrocassis involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage, typically within the soil or under debris. When temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles emerge to feed and reproduce. Females lay eggs on the leaves of host plants, and larvae emerge to begin skeletonizing the foliage, often using their own excrement for additional protection against natural enemies.
Damage caused by these beetles is characterized by extensive skeletonization of leaves. Both adults and larvae chew irregular holes in the leaf blades, often leaving only the main veins intact. Severe infestations lead to a reduction in the leaf surface area, which hampers photosynthesis and directly impacts plant vigor, root development, and total biomass yield of the affected crops.
Management and control strategies for Acrocassis infestations include:
- Rigorous weed management, particularly removing bindweed from fields and field margins.
- Implementing crop rotation to break the pest's reproductive cycle.
- Field monitoring to detect early signs of defoliation by larvae.
- Use of targeted insecticides if economic injury thresholds are exceeded, ensuring compliance with local safety regulations.
