Acrocercops syngramma is a moth species belonging to the family Gracillariidae (leaf blotch miner moths). It is a significant pest of cashew trees, known for its specific feeding behavior that causes structural damage to the foliage of Anacardium occidentale, hindering its commercial production.
The primary host plant for this insect is the cashew tree. The larvae are specialized leaf miners; they penetrate the epidermis of the leaves shortly after hatching and begin feeding on the internal green tissue (mesophyll), creating winding tunnels or blotch mines that are visible on the leaf surface.
The life cycle of Acrocercops syngramma consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. The female typically lays eggs on young, tender leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately burrow into the leaf tissue, where they grow and progress through several instars before pupating, often within the leaf or in debris on the ground.
The damage caused by this pest is primarily cosmetic and physiological. Severe infestations result in extensive leaf mines, leading to necrosis, yellowing, and eventual leaf fall. Because the larvae destroy the photosynthetic tissue, the plant's overall energy production is reduced, directly affecting the yield and size of the cashew nuts.
Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Regular field inspections are crucial to detect the onset of infestation. Chemical control is most effective when systemic insecticides are applied at the time of egg-laying. Furthermore, destroying infected foliage and encouraging natural predators can help maintain the population below the economic injury level.
