Acrocercops zygonoma

Systematic position. Acrocercops zygonoma belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Gracillariidae. Known as leaf-mining moths, members of this group are characterized by their larvae feeding within the leaf tissue, creating specialized tunnels known as mines that protect them from external environmental factors and many natural predators.

Host plants. This pest primarily attacks plants within the Fabaceae (legume) family. It has been documented as a significant pest on various Indigofera species. These plants are often grown for their economic importance, such as forage production or soil enrichment, making the impact of this leaf miner particularly relevant for legume agriculture.

Biology and life cycle. The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult moth lays eggs on the leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the leaf epidermis to consume the mesophyll tissue. As they grow, the mines expand in size. Once the larval development is complete, the insect pupates, typically emerging later as an adult moth to repeat the cycle.

Damage and economic significance. The damage is characterized by the appearance of blotch-like or serpentine mines on the leaves. As the larvae consume the green tissue, they disrupt the plant's photosynthetic capacity. Severe infestations cause leaf chlorosis, curling, and premature defoliation, which stunts plant growth and significantly reduces the total yield or quality of the host crop.
