Systematic position of this insect belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. The genus Acyrthosiphon includes significant agricultural pests, with Acyrthosiphon pisum being the most recognized species worldwide for its impact on legume crops.

Host plants mainly consist of various leguminous crops. The pea aphid primarily feeds on peas, but it is also a major pest for alfalfa, clover, broad beans, lentils, and vetches. Its ability to switch hosts throughout the season ensures its survival and continued reproduction on different plant species.

Biology and lifecycle are characterized by a combination of sexual and asexual reproduction. They overwinter as eggs on perennial legumes. In spring, wingless stem mothers emerge, starting a cycle of rapid asexual reproduction. During the summer, winged forms are produced to disperse to new host plants, leading to explosive population growth in warm, dry weather.

Damage and harmfulness manifest through the depletion of plant sap, which stunts growth and causes leaf curling, yellowing, and flower abortion. Beyond direct physical damage, the pea aphid acts as a critical vector for various plant viruses, particularly those that cause mosaic diseases, which can lead to total crop failure if not managed.

Control measures require an integrated approach. Farmers should prioritize early sowing to avoid peak aphid activity and select resistant cultivars. Chemical control involves the application of systemic insecticides when thresholds are exceeded. Encouraging natural enemies like ladybirds, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps is essential for sustainable population management.
