Systematic position: The genus Adelocera belongs to the order Coleoptera and is a member of the Elateridae family, commonly known as click beetles. These insects are significant in agricultural entomology because their larvae, known as wireworms, are notorious for causing extensive damage to subterranean plant structures.

Crops damaged: Adelocera is a polyphagous pest, meaning it feeds on a diverse range of agricultural crops. It is particularly damaging to cereal crops, maize, potatoes, sugar beet, and various horticultural seedlings. By targeting the root system and subterranean stems, they compromise the integrity of the crop from the very beginning of the season.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis involving the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The larval stage is the most prolonged and destructive, typically lasting for several years underground. This extended period of development makes it difficult for farmers to eliminate the population through short-term treatments alone.

Nature of damage: Larvae inhabit the soil and feed on seeds, germinating embryos, and primary root systems. This feeding activity leads to uneven field emergence, stunted plant growth, and in severe infestations, complete crop failure. Damaged tissues are also more susceptible to fungal pathogens and root rots, exacerbating the economic loss.
