Mouse-colored click beetle

Adelocera murina

Description

The mouse-colored click beetle (Adelocera murina) is a member of the Elateridae family, order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural ecosystems, where its larvae, widely known as wireworms, cause substantial damage to various crops by feeding on their subterranean tissues.

The adult beetle ranges from 11 to 16 mm in length and is covered with dense, grayish-brown pubescence, which gives it a matte appearance. The larvae are distinctively elongated, cylindrical, and have a hardened, sclerotized cuticle. This morphology allows them to navigate through the soil and bore into plant roots and stems efficiently.

The life cycle of Adelocera murina is prolonged, typically spanning between 3 to 5 years. Most of this time is spent in the larval stage underground. Adults emerge in spring, engage in dispersal flights, and seek suitable oviposition sites, often favoring fields with dense vegetation or established grain crops where soil moisture is maintained.

Damage is primarily inflicted by the larvae, which feed on germinating seeds, roots, and the subterranean parts of stems. Crops such as wheat, corn, sugar beets, and potatoes are particularly vulnerable. Heavy infestations lead to patchiness in crops, stunted growth, or complete mortality of young plants due to the disruption of root systems.

Managing the mouse-colored click beetle requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to minimize economic loss:

  • Tillage practices, specifically cultivation during the pupation period to expose vulnerable stages to predators and desiccation.
  • Crop rotation, avoiding susceptible crops in high-risk fields for consecutive years.
  • Liming of acidic soils, which significantly reduces the survival rate of wireworms.
  • Seed treatment with systemic insecticides to protect the crop during the most vulnerable early growth stages.
