The genus comprises several species, with Aedia funesta being the most notable in agricultural contexts. As members of the order Lepidoptera, these moths are primarily nocturnal, which makes identifying early infestations challenging for farm managers.

The primary hosts for the larvae of this genus are plants within the Convolvulaceae family, particularly field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) and sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas). While they favor these weeds, during population surges, the caterpillars can migrate to surrounding commercial crops, causing significant damage to foliage and reducing the marketability of the produce.

The biological cycle of Aedia involves a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. Female moths typically deposit their eggs on the undersides of host plant leaves. The larvae are voracious feeders, passing through several instar stages before pupating. They typically overwinter in the soil or within accumulated plant debris, emerging as adults in the following spring or early summer.
