Systematic position: The alligator weed flea beetle (Agasicles hygrophila) is a species of beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae within the order Coleoptera. It has been extensively studied and utilized globally as a biological control agent to manage infestations of the invasive aquatic weed known as alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides).

Affected crops: This beetle is a highly host-specific herbivore. It does not pose a threat to commercial agricultural crops, as its diet is almost exclusively restricted to alligator weed. Its high specificity ensures that the biological control program does not negatively impact non-target aquatic flora or surrounding agricultural lands.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Agasicles hygrophila is uniquely adapted to aquatic environments. Adult females deposit clusters of eggs on the underside of alligator weed leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae feed voraciously on the plant foliage and stems. Development through larval stages is rapid, allowing for multiple generations per growing season, which is crucial for building a large population density.

Larvae and adults strip the plant of its leaves and excavate tunnels within the stems.
