Description
The alder leaf beetle (Agelastica alni) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. This small beetle, typically measuring 6–7 mm in length, is easily identified by its glossy, dark blue or violet metallic coloration. As a foliage-feeding insect, it poses a recurring challenge to silviculture and nut orchards.
The beetle primarily targets various species of alder, but it is also recognized as a significant pest for hazelnuts (Corylus avellana). In cases of large populations, the beetle can inflict severe damage to foliage, potentially causing stunted growth and reduced yields in commercial hazelnut orchards and forest plantations.
The biological cycle of this pest is univoltine, meaning it produces one generation per year. Adults hibernate in soil litter or crevices in the bark throughout the winter. In the spring, they emerge to feed and deposit eggs in clusters on the underside of leaves. The larvae progress through three instars before dropping to the soil to pupate.
The damage caused by the alder leaf beetle is characterized by skeletonization. Adult beetles consume irregularly shaped holes in the leaves, while larvae feed on the leaf tissue between the veins, eventually leaving only the leaf skeleton. This activity significantly reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity and can lead to premature leaf drop.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Cultural controls include maintaining clean orchard floors and tilling the soil under the canopy to disrupt the pupation stage. In instances of economic thresholds being exceeded, the application of registered insecticides is recommended, specifically targeting the larval stages when they are most vulnerable to chemical control.
