The Agistemus genus belongs to the family Stigmaeidae within the order Trombidiformes. These mites exhibit complex feeding behaviors, often classified as facultative predators or phytophages. In agricultural settings, they are monitored for their potential to damage plant tissues when their population density reaches economic threshold levels.
These pests commonly infest a wide range of fruit crops, including grapes, apples, and citrus plants, as well as various ornamental species. They primarily reside on the abaxial side of leaves, where they establish feeding sites, making them somewhat protected from environmental stressors and broad-spectrum contact pesticides.
The biological development of Agistemus is strongly influenced by ambient temperature and humidity. Their life cycle consists of egg, larva, nymph, and adult stages.
