Florida agistemus mite

The Florida agistemus mite (Agistemus floridanus) is a member of the Stigmaeidae family, belonging to the order Trombidiformes. While many species within this family are considered beneficial predators, this specific mite is recognized as a pest capable of causing significant economic damage to various agricultural crops, particularly in warm, subtropical regions.

The primary hosts for this pest are citrus trees, including orange and grapefruit varieties. These mites feed by piercing the plant tissue and extracting cellular fluids from the leaves. This feeding process interferes with photosynthesis, leading to reduced vitality of the host plant and negatively impacting overall crop yield and quality.

The biology of Agistemus floridanus is driven by temperature, with rapid life cycle completion in warm weather. Females typically deposit eggs on the underside of leaves, often nestled along the veins. The life cycle proceeds through larval, protonymph, and deutonymph stages before reaching adulthood. Hot and dry environmental conditions provide optimal climate conditions for accelerated population growth.

Damage symptoms include the chlorosis of leaves, the appearance of distinct pale spotting, and general plant stunting. Severe infestations often lead to premature leaf drop, which weakens the tree and makes it susceptible to opportunistic diseases and subsequent pest attacks. Monitoring the canopy is essential during periods of high environmental stress.

Management of this mite involves an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This includes maintaining proper soil moisture and horticultural hygiene to reduce environmental stress on plants. When chemical intervention is necessary, specific acaricides should be used, alternating chemical classes to mitigate the development of pesticide resistance. Biological control, utilizing native predatory insects or mites, is also a recommended strategy in sustainable farming systems.
