Description
The Tau emperor (Aglia tau) is a prominent species of the Saturniidae family. While often appreciated for its unique appearance, in forestry, it is categorized as a leaf-eating pest capable of causing significant damage to deciduous ecosystems when population densities spike.
This moth primarily targets deciduous trees, with hosts including beech, birch, oak, linden, alder, and willow. The larvae are voracious feeders that can strip trees of their foliage, leading to widespread defoliation, which causes significant stress to the host plants during the active growing season.
The biological cycle of the Tau emperor is univoltine, meaning it produces only one generation per year. The species overwinters as pupae enclosed in sturdy cocoons hidden within the leaf litter. Adult emergence occurs in early spring, following which the moths mate and lay eggs on the host plants. The larvae emerge and spend the summer months feeding, moving through several instars before finally pupating in the autumn.
The damage caused by these insects is characterized by extensive foliar consumption.
