Systematic position: The dark sword-grass moth (Agrotis ipsilon) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is globally recognized as a significant agricultural pest, frequently referred to as a cutworm due to the feeding habits of its larvae. This species is highly migratory and can colonize new areas rapidly, causing severe economic losses in various cropping systems.

Biology and lifecycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The moths are nocturnal and strong fliers. The larvae typically pass through six instars. The duration of the life cycle is heavily dependent on ambient temperature, allowing for multiple generations per year in temperate and tropical regions. They survive unfavorable conditions by pupating in the soil.

Nature of damage and pest status: The damage is exclusively caused by the larval stage. Early instars feed on foliage, but older larvae become soil-dwellers. They typically sever the stems of young seedlings at or just below the soil surface, causing the plants to collapse and wilt. This behavior is particularly destructive in the early spring, as it can cause total crop failure in large patches, leading to reduced stand density.
