Taxonomic position: The green-striped grasshopper (Aiolopus thalassinus) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. This species is commonly found across Eurasia and Africa, thriving in humid environments such as river banks, irrigated fields, and marshy grasslands, which serve as primary habitats for its life cycle.

Host plants: This insect is a generalist feeder that causes significant economic damage to cereal crops including wheat, barley, rice, millet, and maize. In addition to grains, it frequently attacks leguminous crops and various pasture grasses, often moving from abandoned fields into commercial agricultural lands during peak infestation years.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. The species overwinters as eggs buried in the soil. Nymphs emerge in spring and undergo five molts (instars) before reaching maturity. They are highly active during the day, feeding on plant tissues throughout their development, with peak activity coinciding with warmer, stable weather patterns.

Nature of damage and pest status: Both nymphs and adults consume foliage, often stripping leaves to the midrib and causing severe defoliation. In severe infestations, the grasshoppers attack stems and flowering parts of plants, leading to reduced photosynthesis, stunted growth, and loss of seed yield. Their ability to migrate makes them a persistent threat to large-scale agriculture.

Protection measures: Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as deep autumn plowing to destroy egg pods and weed control to remove alternative food sources, are critical. If populations exceed economic thresholds, chemical control using contact or systemic insecticides remains the primary method for protecting crops during the vulnerable seedling stage.
