Aleurodothrips

Aleurodothrips

Description

Systematic position: The genus Aleurodothrips belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Phlaeothripidae. The most well-known species, Aleurodothrips fasciapennis, is particularly interesting due to its predatory behavior, as it frequently feeds on other small insects such as scale insects and whiteflies, in addition to plant tissues.

Host crops: This pest is primarily found on citrus trees, including lemons, oranges, and mandarins. While they are known to inhabit subtropical and tropical regions, they are highly dependent on the presence of host plants and, often, the presence of other insect colonies that serve as their potential prey.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through the stages of egg, two larval instars, propupa, pupa, and adult. Their development is highly influenced by temperature and humidity levels. Their role is dual: while they are pests that feed on plant sap, they are also beneficial predators, making their management a matter of ecological balance within the orchard.

Character of damage: Damage is manifested through leaf deformation, chlorosis, and the reduction of tree vigor due to sap extraction. Furthermore, they contribute to the proliferation of sooty mold, which develops on the honeydew-like secretions produced by the insects. However, significant damage is usually observed only when their predatory nature is insufficient to control other pest populations.

Control measures: Effective management of Aleurodothrips requires an integrated approach.

  • Implementation of regular monitoring using sticky traps to determine population density.
  • Application of horticultural mineral oils to reduce pest numbers without harming beneficial insects.
  • Targeted use of selective insecticides only when the damage threshold is exceeded.
  • Promotion of natural biodiversity to encourage local predators and parasites.
