Description

Aleuroglyphus, notably the species Aleuroglyphus ovatus, is a common and destructive pest belonging to the family Acaridae within the order Acariformes. These mites are primarily known as storage pests, thriving in stored agricultural commodities such as wheat, flour, animal feed, and various oilseeds, often causing extensive damage to global food supplies.

The biology of Aleuroglyphus is highly adaptive, allowing it to multiply rapidly in environments with high moisture content. The life cycle comprises an egg, larva, protonymph, hypopus (a dormant, resilient stage for unfavorable conditions), deutonymph, and adult. The population density can explode within weeks if the moisture content of the stored grain exceeds 14% and temperatures remain in the range of 20°C to 30°C.

This mite species primarily damages the germ of the seed, which directly affects the viability and germination rate of grains intended for planting. Furthermore, they feed on endosperm, reducing the weight and nutritional quality of commercial grain. They are notorious for their ability to thrive in dense grain masses, creating optimal conditions for subsequent fungal infestations.

The presence of Aleuroglyphus is often signaled by a distinct sweet or honey-like odor and the accumulation of a fine, powdery residue consisting of excrement, cast skins, and debris. Heavily infested materials often become caked together due to silk webbing, and the grain may undergo a self-heating process that leads to rapid spoilage and the production of mycotoxins, rendering it dangerous for consumption.

Management strategies focus on preventing the colonization of storage facilities and maintaining low-risk conditions. Key methods include

  • drying grain to a safe moisture level below 13%;
  • thorough sanitation of storage bins prior to loading;
  • frequent monitoring of temperature gradients in silos;
  • professional fumigation protocols for empty and filled warehouses;
  • implementing proper ventilation to control humidity levels.
