Alpenus maculosa is a species of moth within the family Erebidae, subfamily Arctiinae. Recognized as a significant agricultural pest, this moth is known for its distinct spotted wing pattern. Its classification within the Arctiinae subfamily marks it as part of a group of insects often associated with polyphagous feeding habits, meaning they can thrive on a wide variety of plant hosts.

This pest is highly polyphagous, targeting a broad range of crops including vegetables, legumes, and various fruit-bearing trees. By feeding on the foliage, the larvae (caterpillars) can cause extensive damage to both small-scale gardens and large commercial farms, affecting the overall physiological development of the plants and reducing the harvest potential.

The life cycle of Alpenus maculosa is typical of tiger moths, consisting of a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The development speed is primarily regulated by ambient temperatures. The larvae generally undergo several molts (instars) before pupating. Pupation usually occurs in hidden areas, such as the soil surface or under debris, allowing the insect to survive periods of dormancy.

The primary damage is caused by the larval stage, which consumes large amounts of leaf tissue. This process, known as defoliation, prevents the plant from photosynthesizing effectively, leading to stunted growth and weakened plant health. In cases of severe infestation, the loss of photosynthetic area can lead to total crop failure and significant economic losses for producers.
